Do social media platforms count spaces in character limits?
Yes, unconditionally. Every major platform (X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, Facebook) counts spaces as characters. Always look at "Characters (With Spaces)".
Why does an emoji count as more than 1 character on social media?
In Unicode UTF-16 encoding, basic characters take 1 code unit. Complex emojis with skin tones or zero-width joiners (such as family emojis or thumbs up with skin tone) consume 2 to 7 code units, causing surprise character limit overages.
What is the "Fold" on Instagram and LinkedIn?
The "fold" is the cutoff point before a user must click "more" or "...see more". On Instagram, the fold happens around 125 characters. On LinkedIn, it happens around 140 characters. Putting your strongest hook before the fold maximizes engagement.
How many characters are in a single SMS message?
A standard SMS text message contains 160 characters in 7-bit GSM encoding. If you include even a single emoji or special character, the encoding switches to UCS-2 (Unicode), dropping the limit per SMS segment to only 70 characters.
